Hundehilfe Toska
Tuscany, Italy
About the project
Hundehilfe Toskana e.V. was founded in 2019 to offer dogs in Italy's beautiful Tuscan region a chance at a beautiful life. The organisation specialises in rescuing hunting dogs, as they hold a unique status among Tuscan hunters. These dogs are not treated as family members but as working animals, confined to small, overcrowded, and often dark kennels. They endure harsh weather conditions with minimal food and water until they are deemed unfit for hunting, at which point they are discarded. Given the prevalence of hunters in Tuscany, they are constantly fighting against crowded shelters, finding many dogs homes in Germany.
With an extensive experience in animal welfare, the team at Hundehilfe Toskana is unwaveringly dedicated to assisting vulnerable animals by supporting local animal rescuers and facilitating the adoption of dogs from Italy to Germany. They maintain a strong relationship with Italian shelters, providing essential supplies like food, blankets, and medicine, and covering veterinary expenses.

More about What they do
The local animal rescuers continually receive messages from people who want to "get rid of" their dogs since it has become widely known that they are willing to take in unwanted dogs. Due to this, the shelters are often packed, with no space available to provide even temporary shelter for more dogs. This is especially problematic because those who want to get rid of their dog often seek a quick solution, and using a firearm, for many, is not a moral issue.
Hundehilfe Toskana acts as an agent between the Italian shelters and adopters in Germany, using their platform as a rehoming site to ensure these homeless souls do not remain unseen. Their work is essential, as the dogs that do not find refuge with Hundehilfe Toskana are often sent to government-run shelters (Canile), where they face bleak prospects. These facilities receive subsidies for each dog and, therefore, have little incentive to rehome them.
While rehoming lies at the heart of their work, fostering is also strongly encouraged. This helps the dogs transition to family life and allows potential adopters to meet them, freeing up more shelter space in Tuscany for dogs in need.
“Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.”
